BACKGROUND:

 

Currently, students in Washington State are required to study the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the state of Washington prior to graduating from high school.  Students must have a full year of United States history and government, a full year of contemporary world history and a half-year of Washington State history and government to meet statutory graduation requirements.

 

The Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers are not specifically mentioned in any requirements. 

 

SUMMARY:

 

School districts are urged to instruct all students in the meaning and history of the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers.
