Brief Description:  Prohibiting high school dropouts from obtaining or keeping drivers' permits or licenses.

BACKGROUND:

 

Anyone under the age of 18 must attend a certified driver instruction course as approved by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Department of Licensing as a condition to receiving a driver's license.

 

SUMMARY:

 

Any individual under the age of 18 who has dropped out of high school, or who has 10 consecutive or 15 days total unexcused absences from high school during one semester is not eligible to receive or keep a driver's license until he or she reaches the age of 18. 

 

School officials shall notify department officials of any student over the age of 15 who has 10 consecutive or 15 days total unexcused absences from high school during one semester.

 

People under the age of 18 when applying for a driver's license shall provide proof of high school attendance, a high school diploma, or a letter from the parent or guardian stating the applicant has received an adequate education under the alternative schooling statutes.
