BACKGROUND:
Chapter 18.145 RCW states that the Legislature intends that only individuals who meet and maintain minimum standards of competence may represent themselves as shorthand or court reporters.
The practice of shorthand or court reporting is regulated by the Department of Licensing. Current law requires that the practice of shorthand or court reporting be regulated at the level of certification.
The department issues a permanent certificate to any applicant that meets the following criteria: 1) successfully completes an examination approved by the director, 2) is of good moral character, 4) has not engaged in unprofessional conduct, and 5) is able to practice with reasonable skill.
SUMMARY:
Graduates of a community or technical college court reporting school are issued a certificate by the Department of Licensing without further examination.
