State of Washington              52nd Legislature             1991 Regular Session

By Representatives O'Brien and Dellwo.

Read first time January 14, 1991.  Referred to Committee on Capital Facilities & Financing.Providing funding for the Georgetown steam plant.

AN ACT Relating to historical activities; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.      The legislature recognizes that providing funding for the preservation of historic landmarks is a substantial and compelling interest of the state.  The Georgetown steam plant, built in 1906, has been designated a national historic landmark.  The Friends of the Georgetown steam plant seek to open it to the public as the electrek museum.  The electrek museum will not only benefit the Georgetown area economically, but will also serve as an educational tool allowing all citizens, especially school-age children, to better understand many of the underlying principles of modern technology.  The legislature further recognizes the need to provide the Friends of the Georgetown steam plant a state-funded grant to allow them to open the electrek museum.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.      The sum of one hundred fifty thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1993, from the general fund to the department of community development for the purposes of assisting the Friends of the Georgetown steam plant.
