     AN ACT Relating to label information for over-the-counter medications; adding a new section to chapter 69.60 RCW; creating new sections; and providing an effective date.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.      The legislature finds that printed material on labels and notices packaged with nonprescription drugs may be difficult to read.  This difficulty presents a potential danger to the health and safety of customers, therefore, every effort should be made to print these materials in a manner that makes them more comprehensible.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 69.60 RCW to read as follows:

     No over-the-counter medication may be manufactured or commercially distributed within this state unless the label meets requirements established by the board to assure readability and clarity of label information.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 3.      The board of pharmacy shall evaluate the labeling of over-the-counter drugs for readability and clarity of label information.  By January 1, 1992, the board shall adopt rules to take effect January 1, 1993, establishing minimum requirements for label information for over-the-counter medications.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 4.      Section 2 of this act shall take effect January 1, 1993.
