     AN ACT Relating to teacher education; and adding a new section to chapter 28A.305 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.305 RCW to read as follows:

     (1) Beginning September 1, 1992, in addition to any other approval requirements for teacher preparation programs pursuant to RCW 28A.305.130(1), the state board of education shall require that the general knowledge required of all candidates for teacher certification include the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively teach and work with students from diverse racial and ethnic populations.

     (2) By October 1, 1993, each teacher preparation program in the state shall submit to the state board of education a summary of the actions the program has taken to ensure that its students will have the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively teach and work with students from diverse racial and ethnic populations.  The state board of education shall synthesize these summaries, and submit a report to the senate and house education committees of the legislature by December 15, 1993.
