AN ACT Relating to making a capital appropriation for the Thomas Burke Memorial Washington State Museum; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.      The Thomas Burke Memorial Washington State Museum was designated a state museum by legislative act in 1899, and is the only state museum of natural history.  It serves both the citizens of the state and the University of Washington in its mission of teaching and research.  Devoted to public education, the museum uses its treasures to teach about the region's diverse environments and cultures, to support education in the natural and social sciences in our schools, and to foster informed stewardship of our resources.  In support of these goals, the museum has prepared a plan for exciting new exhibits that will take full advantage of the wealth of its collections through contemporary concepts and techniques in exhibit design and education.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.      The sum of two million two hundred thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1993, from the state building construction account to the University of Washington for the purpose of developing and installing permanent exhibits at the Thomas Burke Memorial Washington State Museum.  This appropriation shall be matched by at least seven hundred thirty-three thousand dollars provided from other sources for the same purpose as this appropriation.
