Read first time February 8, 1991.  Acknowledging Senator George Fleming upon his retirement from the legislature.


     WHEREAS, The Washington State Legislature has benefited from the outstanding and distinguished service of George Fleming, who began his legislative career in 1968 as a member of the House of Representatives; and

     WHEREAS, George Fleming was elected to the Washington State Senate in 1970, the first African American elected to this body; and

     WHEREAS, He had the honor to serve as Vice-Chair of the Democratic Caucus from 1973 to 1980 and as Caucus Chairman from 1980 to 1988; and

     WHEREAS, Senator George Fleming has retired from the Washington State Legislature after twenty-two years of dedicated service on behalf of his constituents from the 37th District and the people of the State of Washington; and

     WHEREAS, Because of his long and dedicated service, Senator George Fleming is well known as a conscientious and strong advocate for the under privileged, civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, control of illicit drugs, quality educational opportunities for all, and small business and economic development; and

     WHEREAS, Senator George Fleming consistently fought for chore services for senior citizens, quality nursing homes, low-income housing, and emergency food and shelter for the homeless; and

     WHEREAS, George Fleming not only distinguished himself in the Washington State Legislature, but also as a former University of Washington Football and Rose Bowl standout;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives of the State of Washington, the Senate concurring, that they remember Senator George Fleming for his significant achievements and extend heartiest best wishes on his retirement from the Washington State Legislature, and share with him, the personal satisfaction that, as a legislator, he made a commitment so that others may lead happier, more meaningful lives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a committee be established to recommend a suitable recognition to honor Senator George Fleming and to remind future generations of his dedication; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Concurrent Resolution be immediately transmitted to George Fleming by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives and the Secretary of the Senate.
