HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 91-4684, by Representative Nelson.

 

     WHEREAS, A certain amount of on-campus housing for students is provided by each of the state's institutions of higher education; and

     WHEREAS, Adequate, affordable student housing is an essential part of the educational package; and

     WHEREAS, Student housing helps to secure access, fosters diversity, and contributes to the institution of higher education's social role in the community; and

     WHEREAS, Each of the state's institutions of higher education have, at various times, faced a lack of adequate, affordable housing to meet the housing needs of its students; and

     WHEREAS, Each institution of higher education's need for student housing is unique and information must be gathered and analyzed before any conclusion may be drawn or proposals formulated to meet the need for student housing; and

     WHEREAS, The Higher Education Coordinating Board and Council of Presidents have agreed to convene a work group to consider the present and long-range housing needs of students at the state's institutions of higher education and to explore various financing options that could be used to develop additional student housing;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives, That the House of Representatives Committees on Housing and Higher Education each provide legislative monitoring of the student housing needs study to be conducted by the Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Council of Presidents; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the work group shall prepare a written report based on its findings and make recommendations to address the issue of adequate, affordable student housing and that the work group report shall be submitted by December 1, 1991, to the House of Representatives Committees on Housing and Higher Education; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Council of Presidents and members of the House of Representatives Committees on Housing and Higher Education.
