HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 92-4745, by Representatives G. Cole, Jacobsen, Scott, Basich and Orr

 

     WHEREAS, The World Cup Soccer tournament is the biggest and most popular sporting event in the world; and

     WHEREAS, The United States has been selected as the host country for the 1994 Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup Soccer tournament; and

     WHEREAS, The Seattle Youth Soccer Association, the Washington State Soccer Association, and other organizations are striving to convince the World Cup '94 Organizing Committee to choose Seattle as the site for the games; and

     WHEREAS, One hundred thousand youths and adults play on soccer leagues in Washington state; and

     WHEREAS, The World Cup games would attract thousands of soccer enthusiasts from all over the world; and

     WHEREAS, Hosting the 1994 World Cup Soccer games would bring our state economic benefits equal to, or greater than, hosting the Super Bowl; and

     WHEREAS, The world games offer an opportunity to showcase Washington state's role in international trade; and

     WHEREAS, The World Cup Soccer games may be the last opportunity Washington has to host a major sporting event before the year 2000;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the 52nd Legislature of the State of Washington wholly endorses efforts to bring the 1994 World Cup Soccer games to Seattle, and that the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives forward a copy of this resolution to the World Cup '94 Organizing Committee, the Seattle Youth Soccer Association, the Washington State Soccer Association, the Governor of the state of Washington, the Mayor of Seattle, and the King County Executive.
