HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 92-4757, by Representatives O'Brien, Anderson and R. Meyers

 

     WHEREAS, Several of Washington State's aboriginal citizens are directly descended from the signers of the Point Elliott Treaty, Medicine Creek Treaty, and other treaties; and

     WHEREAS, Approximately twenty percent of Washington's aboriginal population are currently enrolled members of the tribes of these signers; and

     WHEREAS, In 1978, a procedure was established by which these tribes may petition for acknowledgement under which various tribes from Washington State have prepared formal applications for acknowledgement;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the pursuit of all tribes to petition for acknowledgement under a clear, unbiased, and timely administrative procedure; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the Chairpersons of the Chinook, Cowlitz, Duwamish, Samish, Snohomish, Snoqualmie, and Steilacoom Tribes of Washington.
