     AN ACT Relating to the prevention of violence in the schools; and adding a new section to chapter 28A.300 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.300 RCW to read as follows:

     (1) The office of the superintendent of public instruction shall develop violence-prevention materials for use in local school districts.  The superintendent may use materials developed by local school districts or other entities.  In developing the materials the superintendent of public instruction may consult with other interested persons and educational organizations.  The materials may include but not be limited to information on the following:

     (a) Techniques for anger management;

     (b) Personal safety methods appropriate for different ages;

     (c) Problem-solving strategies; and

     (d) Effective alternatives to violence for solving problems.

     (2) The office of the superintendent of public instruction shall provide information about the materials to local school districts through the educational service districts.  School districts shall be encouraged to evaluate the materials, adopt or modify the materials, and use the materials.  The superintendent of public instruction shall make the materials available to school districts.
