                  _______________________________________________

State of Washington              52nd Legislature             1992 Regular Session

By Senate Committee on Education (originally sponsored by Senators Moore, Skratek and Pelz)

Read first time 02/07/92.Requiring the superintendent of public instruction to establish a before-and-after-school child care program.

AN ACT Relating to before-and-after-school child care; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.      The legislature finds that school-age children need the opportunity to attend a quality, developmentally appropriate before-and-after-school care program.  The cost of before-and-after-school programs creates financial hardships for many families and often results in children being left alone at home.  A structured before-and-after-school program can ensure the safety and welfare of school-age children.  The office of the superintendent of public instruction, the department of social and health services, and the child care coordinating committee shall develop a plan for implementation of a before-and-after-school child care program.  The plan shall be submitted to the legislature by December 1, 1992.
