SENATE RESOLUTION

     WHEREAS, Alex Haley was a renowned and respected man of letters; and

     WHEREAS, Alex Haley provided people everywhere with a vision of history and justice in a style which was unique and respected; and

     WHEREAS, Alex Haley was a literary success throughout the world as shown in Roots, The Autobiography of Malcom X both of which sold millions of copies; and

     WHEREAS, Alex Haley made a difference in the lives of all people who knew him or his works; and

     WHEREAS, Alex Haley embodied the commonality of hopes and ideals of all people regardless of color, religion, gender, or national origin; and

     WHEREAS, Alex Haley lived a life which inspired those who knew him;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate pays homage to Alex Haley and his teachings, ideals, and accomplishments; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate calls on all persons in the state to join in so honoring Alex Haley; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate expresses its regrets for his departure and extends its condolences to his family, his friends, and those whose life he touched; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution shall be transmitted to each of Mr. Haley's children.
