HOUSE COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE & LABOR

SENATE COMMITTEE ON LABOR & COMMERCE

Majority Report:  Do pass.

Signed by Senators Moore, Chairman; Prentice, Vice Chairman; Barr, Cantu, Fraser, McAuliffe, Newhouse, Pelz, Prince, and Sutherland.

Staff:  Erika Lim (786‑7488)

Hearing Dates: March 19, 1993; March 24, 1993

BACKGROUND:

Athlete agents represent individuals in negotiations with professional sports teams.  Their actions are regulated and they must be registered with the Department of Licensing.

SUMMARY:

The definition of athlete agent is changed from persons registered under this chapter to persons required to be registered under this chapter.  This makes unregistered agents subject to the same regulations and penalties as registered agents.

Redundant language referring to "employment with a professional sports team or as a professional athlete" is replaced with "employment as a professional athlete."
