BACKGROUND:

Mathematics, science, and technology are important parts of education and workforce training.  Technology likely will be key to Washington's long-term economic prosperity.

SUMMARY:

The Washington Legislature requests that the federal government enhance its efforts to promote mathematics, science, and technology through expanded scholarships and expanded research and development programs.

TESTIMONY FOR:

The launching of Sputnik forced the nation to focus on science and mathematics education in 1957.  To prepare our workforce for the 21st century, renewed emphasis must be placed on mathematics, science and technology education and training.
