SENATE BILL REPORT
SB 5643
AS OF FEBRUARY 15, 1993
Brief Description: Requiring voting precinct boundaries to be redrawn to conform to state law.
SPONSORS: Senators Cantu, Snyder and Winsley
SENATE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS
Staff: Barbara Howard (786‑7410)
Hearing Dates: February 18, 1993
BACKGROUND:
Changes to the boundaries of voting precincts must follow visible, physical features delineated in U.S. Census Bureau maps. A change need not follow the Census maps unless it is necessitated by an annexation or incorporation and (1) the proposed boundary itself does not follow a visible, physical feature, or (2) election administration would be substantially impaired by the change. If election administration would be impaired by a boundary change, the county auditor must issue a statement giving the reasons of impairment.
SUMMARY:
The ability to avoid conforming voting precinct boundaries to U.S. Census map features because administration of elections would be impaired is deleted.
Appropriation: none
Revenue: none
Fiscal Note: none requested
