Brief Description:  Changing school district dissolution and annexation provisions.

BACKGROUND:

 

Under current Washington State law, school districts with an average enrollment of fewer than five students in grades K-8 are dissolved by the regional committee and the territory is annexed to another district or other districts.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The average student enrollment in grades K-8 that constitutes grounds for dissolution of a school district is increased from five to 150.  Any district subject to dissolution under this section shall indicate in writing to the annexing district whether or not the schools in the district shall remain open.  The annexing district, for the first school year following the annexation, may not close the schools in the district dissolved.
