SENATE COMMITTEE ON LAW & JUSTICE
Staff: Jon Carlson (786‑7459)
Hearing Dates: January 21, 1994
BACKGROUND:
Under current law, a person may apply to various issuing authorities for a concealed pistol license. These issuing authorities are the judge of a court of record, the chief of police of a municipality, or the sheriff of a county.
The concealed pistol license must be issued to a qualified applicant within 30 days for the purpose of protection or while engaged in business, sport, or while traveling. If the applicant does not have a valid permanent Washington driver's license or Washington State identification card or has not been a resident of the state for the previous consecutive 90 days, the issuing authority has up to 60 days after the filing of the application to issue a license.
Language is suggested which would require that a person apply for a concealed pistol license with an issuing authority that is within the jurisdiction in which the applicant resides.
SUMMARY:
A person who applies for a concealed pistol license must do so with the judge of a court of record, chief of police, or sheriff of the jurisdiction in which the applicant resides.
