BACKGROUND:

 

Under current law, the Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) may pay for substitutes for certificated employees when a certificated employee is requested by the SPI or the State Board of Education to serve on a committee formed for the purpose of furthering education within the state or the school district, and it is necessary to obtain a substitute to perform the certificated employee's duties.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Superintendent of Public Instruction may pay for substitutes for classified employees when a classified employee is requested by the SPI or the State Board of Education to serve on a committee formed for the purpose of furthering education within the state or the school district, and it is necessary to obtain a substitute to perform the classified employee's duties.

TESTIMONY FOR:

 

Classified employees, representing 44 percent of the educational workforce, provide a valuable contribution to the education of our students.  Many classified employees are currently serving on educational committees, including those formed for the purpose of education reform.  Every effort should be made to ensure that classified employees are treated equitably with their certificated colleagues.
