BACKGROUND:
Under current law, instruction in basic skills areas, including health, and instruction in the area of work skills must be made available by each school district to students in grades nine through 12. There is no state requirement that districts offer students instruction concerning child rearing.
SUMMARY:
School districts must offer students in grades nine through 12 instruction concerning the costs and responsibilities associated with child rearing as part of the required offering of program hours in the basic skill area of health or as part of the required offering of program hours in the area of work skills.
If a district receives a waiver from the program hour offerings requirements, the district must include in its alternative 1,000 hours of instruction in grades one through 12, instruction concerning child rearing. This instruction must be included within the essential academic learning requirements (EALRS) being developed for health and fitness under student learning goal number two or within the EALRS developed for understanding the importance of work under student learning goal number four.
