BACKGROUND:

 

Sustainable development embraces the concept that our environmental resources should be used at a rate that can be sustained over time and that future generations should be able to rely on these resource to sustain their economies.  The United Nations established an independent commission which has issued policy recommendations for achieving sustainable development.  Several nations have already developed comprehensive plans, based on the U.N. commission's work.  The President has established the President's Commission on Sustainable Development.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Legislature resolves to encourage cooperative international, national, and statewide efforts to promote sustainable development.  The Legislature also resolves that the state is to implement a sustainable development plan.
