Requesting the federal government to enhance the promotion of mathematics, science, and technology.


          TO THE HONORABLE BILL CLINTON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES, IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED:

          We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:

          WHEREAS, Mathematics, science, and technology are key parts of the education of youth and the work force and are key to the long-term economic prosperity of Washington and the nation; and

          WHEREAS, In the coming years mathematics, science, and technology will become even more pervasive and important with growing concerns about health, environmental protection, conservation, energy supply, industrial growth, and competing in a global economy; and

          WHEREAS, The most likely leading industries in the twenty‑first century will be based on mathematics, science, and technology, including microelectronics, biotechnology, new materials industries, civilian aviation, telecommunications, robotics, and computer-related technologies; and

          WHEREAS, Literacy in mathematics, science, and technology will become increasingly important to the social well-being and economic future of Washington state and the nation; and

          WHEREAS, Significant improvement in mathematics, science, and technology must occur in all segments of the population to enable Washington state and the nation to build upon existing public and private sector resources to take full advantage of the projected leading industries for the twenty‑first century; and

          WHEREAS, A national educational goal exists to make this nation the leader in mathematics and science by the year 2000; and

          WHEREAS, States, including Washington, have increased their efforts to promote mathematics, science, and technology development;

          NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the federal government enhance its efforts to promote mathematics, science, and technology through expanded educational scholarships and expanded technology research and development programs.

          BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of Washington.
