Providing cash bonuses to public assistance recipients as an incentive for students to graduate from high school.



    AN ACT Relating to school graduation incentives for recipients of public assistance; and adding a new section to chapter 74.12 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 74.12 RCW to read as follows:

    Recipients of aid to families with dependent children are eligible for a one-time monetary bonus scholarship per child above their aid to families with dependent children grant if the school age child or children of the parent, stepparent, relative, or guardian with whom the child lives has a grade point average of 2.5 or above, graduates from high school, and is enrolled at a postsecondary education institution.  The scholarship must be used by the family to directly support the student's postsecondary education.  The department shall report to the appropriate standing committees of the state legislature by December 1, 1996, on the impact that the availability of the bonuses has on the number of students graduating.
