Providing for transit police officers.



    AN ACT Relating to transit police officers; and adding a new section to chapter 36.57A RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 36.57A RCW to read as follows:

    (1) In addition to the general powers granted by this chapter, a public transportation benefit area authority may appoint transit police officers who, upon being appointed and duly sworn, may have full police powers to enforce all applicable federal, state, or local government statutes, rules, regulations, or ordinances when violations affect the public transportation benefit area's transportation operations or occur on or about the facilities, property, vehicles, or equipment belonging to or under the control of the public transportation benefit area's transportation operations.  Transit police officers are general authority Washington peace officers whose powers include the powers granted under chapter 10.93 RCW.

    (2) Transit police officers appointed under this section must have successfully completed the training required by RCW 43.101.200.

    (3) The public transportation benefit area is entitled to a seventy-five percent share of costs or penalties collected by local governments as a result of the local government's prosecution of violators cited or arrested by transit police officers.
