Concerning Taiwan.



          TO THE HONORABLE BILL CLINTON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES, IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED:

          We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:

          WHEREAS, The United States has recognized the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China since 1979; and

          WHEREAS, Taiwan has been a strong trading partner of the United States and of the State of Washington, with over five billion dollars in trade between Taiwan and the State of Washington annually; and

          WHEREAS, Taiwan desires admission to the United Nations as a member nation; and

          WHEREAS, The State of Washington desires to enter into a sister state relationship with Taiwan;

          NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the United States reestablish diplomatic relations with Taiwan and advocate before the United Nations for the admission of Taiwan as a member nation.

          BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of Washington.
