     On page 6, after line 32, insert the following:

     "NEW SECTION. Sec. 4.  CHARTER SCHOOL DISTRICTS.  (1) A school district board of directors may apply to an educational service district to receive approval for the school district to be designated a charter school district. 

     (2) A school district board of directors that is interested in having its school district be designated a charter school district shall submit an application to the educational service district in which the school district is located.  The application shall include the information required in section 3(1) of this act.  The application also shall include evidence that parents of students enrolled in the school district and school district personnel are supportive of the application.

     (3)  The charter of the charter school district shall include the requirements in section 3(5) of this act.  Admission requirements for schools in the district shall be consistent with section 5 of this act and funding for charter schools within the district shall be in accordance with section 6 of this act.

     (4) The educational service district may modify the application and other requirements in this act, as needed, so that the requirements are appropriate for a charter school district instead of a charter school.

     (5) The educational service district shall approve or deny an application under this section within ninety days of receiving a completed application. 

     (6)  An educational service district shall not approve more than one charter school district."

 

Renumber remaining sections and correct internal references accordingly.


 

EFFECT:  Allows each Educational Service District to approve one  "Charter School District."
