Background:  The state sets the salary and per diem compensation of port district commissioners and public utility district commissioners, as well as the per diem compensation of many other special purpose districts.  The state sets the salary for the first elective officers of a code city.  The state also sets the minimum salaries for elected county officials.  However, in general, state law is silent as to the total compensation an officer, official, or employee of a local government may receive

 

Summary of Bill:  An officer, official, or employee of any political subdivision, municipal or quasi-municipal corporation, school district or special purpose district formed for any purpose that receives real or personal property taxes is prohibited from receiving compensation in excess of $250,000 per year.  Compensation is defined.

 

Appropriation:  None.

 

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

 

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
