Background: The Legislative Budget Committee (LBC) is a statutory committee of the Legislature established in 1951 to promote the economy and efficiency of state government. The original statute directed the LBC to examine the condition of all state funds and whether state expenditures were consistent with legislative directives. The LBC was also authorized to examine the structure and organization of state government.
Additional powers have been granted to the LBC since its creation in 1951. In the early 1970's, the LBC was authorized to conduct management surveys and performance audits. In 1977, under the Sunset Act, the LBC was directed to undertake the sunset review of state agencies and programs scheduled for termination.
Summary of Bill: The name of the LBC is changed to the Joint Committee on Performance Audits.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
