Title:  An act relating to the study of athletic opportunities for girls.

Background:  Organized athletics can provide opportunities for children to enhance their stamina, strength, agility, and fitness, while developing self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-reliance.

 

It is unclear whether there are sufficient organized athletic opportunities available for girls below the age of 13.

 

Summary of Bill:  If funding is appropriated, the Washington State Institute for Public Policy must conduct a study of the availability of organized athletic opportunities for girls below the age of 13.  The study must include athletic programs offered by public and private entities.

 

The study must examine whether access to athletic opportunities is affected by income, ethnicity, or race.

 

The study must address athletic opportunities in selected large, medium, and small school districts on both sides of the state.

 

The study must examine if there is a statistical relationship between the lack of organized athletic opportunities and risk factors and behaviors. 

 

The study must be presented to the Legislature and the Governor by January 1, 1998.

 

Appropriation:  $49,500.

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
