Providing educational opportunities for students.   


    AN ACT Relating to providing additional educational opportunities for students; and adding a new section to chapter 28A.150 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.150 RCW to read as follows:

    (1) The board of directors of school districts may contract with nonsectarian schools and organizations to provide educational services for students enrolled in the school district, including, but not limited to, students who have been suspended or expelled, who are academically at risk, or who have been subject to disciplinary actions due to behavioral problems.  The contract between the school district board of directors and the school or organization shall specify the specific learning standards that students who participate in the school or organization are expected to achieve.

    (2) The school district shall receive the same level of funding from the state for school district students who are participating in the services authorized in subsection (1) of this section.  The superintendent of public instruction shall provide school districts maximum flexibility when establishing funding criteria for school district students participating in these schools and organizations.
