Funding school safety.



     AN ACT Relating to school safety; and making appropriations.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  (1) There is a need to restore funding eliminated in the 1995-97 operating budget to transport students who live close to schools but must walk through hazardous neighborhoods or road conditions to get to school.  The current level of funding leaves many children at risk.

     (2) The sum of fourteen million one hundred thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1997, from the general fund to the office of the superintendent of public instruction for the purposes of pupil transportation under subsection (1) of this section.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  (1) Gangs, weapons, and drug use continue to pose a serious threat to school security.  Funding must be provided for additional grants to schools for hiring school security guards and combating violence, guns, gangs, and drugs on school grounds.

     (2) The sum of one million five hundred thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1997, from the general fund to the office of the superintendent of public instruction for the purposes of school security under subsection (1) of this section.
