Allowing a candidate's name to appear more than once on a ballot.



     AN ACT Relating to allowing a candidate's name to appear more than once on a ballot; amending RCW 29.30.101; and adding a new section to chapter 29.30 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     Sec. 1.  RCW 29.30.101 and 1990 c 59 s 14 are each amended to read as follows:

     The names of the persons certified as nominees by the secretary of state or the county canvassing board shall be printed on the ballot at the ensuing election.

     No name of any candidate whose nomination at a primary is required by law shall be placed upon the ballot at a general or special election unless it appears upon the certificate of either (1) the secretary of state, or (2) the county canvassing board, or (3) a minor party convention or the state or county central committee of a major political party to fill a vacancy on its ticket under RCW 29.18.160.

     ((Excluding the office of precinct committee officer, a candidate's name shall not appear more than once upon a ballot.))

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 29.30 RCW to read as follows:

     Except as follows, a candidate's or nominee's name may not appear more than once upon the same ballot:

     (1) A candidate for precinct committee officer may also have his or her name appear on the same ballot as a candidate or nominee for another office; and

     (2) A candidate or nominee for a special district elective office may have his or her name appear on the same ballot as a candidate or nominee for another special district elective office.  As used in this subsection, the term "special district" includes, but is not limited to a fire protection district, school district, port district, sewer district, irrigation district, or any other municipal or quasi-municipal corporation, other than a county, city, or town.
