HOUSE BILL 2835
_______________________________________________
State of Washington 54th Legislature 1996 Regular Session
By Representatives Brown, Dickerson, Ogden, Chopp, Kessler, Patterson, Murray, Wolfe, Quall and Costa
Read first time 01/22/96. Referred to Committee on Appropriations.
AN ACT Relating to mitigating potential funding reductions in the head start program; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. The legislature finds that the federal head start program improves the lives of children and their parents through education, nutrition, health, and social services available through the program. The legislature further finds that proposed reductions from the federal government threaten to reduce the size and effectiveness of the head start program. The legislature intends to mitigate any federal reductions to the head start program with state funds.
NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. The sum of two million dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1997, from the general fund to the department of community, trade, and economic development to replace any federal funding reductions to the head start program during the 1995-97 biennium.
