TO THE HONORABLE BILL CLINTON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES, IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED:
We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:
WHEREAS, The State of Washington in the United States of America and Taiwan, the Republic of China have an extensive cultural, economic, and political relationship; and
WHEREAS, Taiwan, the Republic of China, has been a strong trading partner of the United States and of the State of Washington, with over five billion dollars in trade between Taiwan and the State of Washington annually; and
WHEREAS, The State of Washington has chosen to recognize the importance of its relationship with Taiwan, the Republic of China by establishing a Trade Office in Taipei; and
WHEREAS, A democratic, multiparty political system has been smoothly established in Taiwan in recent years; and
WHEREAS, The direct role of Taiwan in international development programs and humanitarian relief operations has expanded significantly during the past decade, often in close coordination with our nation's efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the United States give due consideration to its beneficial commercial relationship with the people of Taiwan, the Republic of China, and to Taiwan's record of democratization at home and humanitarian service abroad. Your memorialists further pray that the United States treat the President of Taiwan and other Taiwan public officials with the respect and consideration afforded to representatives of other democratic nations and, further, that the United States recognize the readiness of Taiwan, the Republic of China, to further contribute through broader participation in the international community, including the United Nations and such forums as multilateral trade associations and humanitarian relief organizations.
BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of Washington.
