Requesting the United States Forest Service to help preserve the War Creek Cabin.



    TO THE HONORABLE BILL CLINTON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES, IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED, AND TO THE UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE:

    We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:

    WHEREAS, Wilderness areas of Washington State provide a variety of recreation opportunities; and

    WHEREAS, Preservation of historic structures enhances the unique culture of the great State of Washington; and

    WHEREAS, Wilderness structures provide shelter in emergencies, such as the recent forest fires; and

    WHEREAS, Publicly available wilderness structures provide opportunities for recreationists with varied interests to cooperate and learn more about each other's interests; and

    WHEREAS, The War Creek Cabin in the North Cascades is such a structure located on public land; and

    WHEREAS, The War Creek Cabin is in excess of sixty years old but has been maintained as an aesthetically pleasing and usable structure; and

    WHEREAS, The War Creek Cabin was historically used as the shelter for crews maintaining the only communication line for the remote community of Stehekin; and

    WHEREAS, It serves the best interests of the citizens of Washington and visitors to the state to preserve and use the War Creek Cabin and similar structures on public land; and

    WHEREAS, The House of Representatives and the Senate of the State of Washington support the preservation and continued use by recreationists of the War Creek Cabin and similar structures on public land;

    NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully request that the United States Forest Service work with local recreation groups such as the Backcountry Horsemen, Methow Valley Chapter, to accomplish preservation and continued use of the War Creek Cabin.

    BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the United States, the Secretary of Agriculture, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of Washington.
