HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 96-4700, by Representatives Foreman, Chappell, Casada, Cairnes, D. Schmidt, Hatfield, Dickerson and Regala

      WHEREAS, January 15, 1996, occasions the remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and

      WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. set an example of devotion to cause, wherein he supported the American values that all persons should live in freedom, dignity, and justice; and

      WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. endeavored to end violence and discrimination against all persons; and

      WHEREAS, Dr. King's efforts were recognized wherein he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership achievements; and

      WHEREAS, Dr. King's efforts were further recognized by the Congress of the United States, which created a permanent federal holiday to commemorate the date of his birth; and

      WHEREAS, Dr. King's efforts are also recognized by this great state of Washington, wherein the date of his birth is commemorated as a legal, paid state and school holiday; and

      WHEREAS, Dr. King's untimely death deeply grieved our nation;

      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the state of Washington pause in our endeavors on behalf of the citizens of this great state of Washington to commemorate the occasion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
