HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 96-4721, by Representatives Regala, R. Fisher, Quall, Rust, H. Sommers, Morris, Mason, Cody, Keiser, Brown, Chopp, Jacobsen, Dickerson, Wolfe, Ogden, Valle, Hatfield, Grant, Kessler, Sheldon, Costa, Tokuda, Cole, Veloria, Murray, Poulsen, Patterson, Basich, Appelwick, Linville, Conway, Scheuerman, Chappell, Scott and Romero

      WHEREAS, It is the policy of the Washington State Legislature to recognize excellence in all fields of endeavor; and

      WHEREAS, On February 5, 1996, Pierce County residents lost a strong advocate and friend when former state Representative James E. "Sal" Salatino passed away in Tacoma at the age of 46; and

      WHEREAS, Jim got his first start in the Legislature as a chauffeur during the 1971 and 1972 sessions; and

      WHEREAS, He was elected to the House of Representatives, serving the 27th Legislative District with honor and distinction for three terms between 1976 and 1982; and

      WHEREAS, Representative Salatino served as one of two Assistant Floor Leaders during the historic 1979 and 1980 sessions, when Democrats and Republicans shared a 49-49 tie in the House of Representatives; and

      WHEREAS, Representative Salatino championed various community projects, including the Norpoint Community Center in Northeast Tacoma.  Salatino also worked with Senator Lorraine Wojahn to obtain state funding for the Pantages Center, which helped revitalize Downtown Tacoma; and

      WHEREAS, Jim went on to serve on the Pierce County Council from 1985 to 1987; and

      WHEREAS, He was a lifetime Tacoma resident and, previous to public service, he taught at Stadium High School, Gault Middle School, and Tacoma Community College; and

      WHEREAS, Sal was active in education and public service throughout his life, always exuding an uncommon sense of humor and drawing from a limitless reservoir of energy; and

      WHEREAS, He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Salatino, a brother John, and countless friends;

      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend its deepest condolences to the family and friends of James E. "Sal" Salatino and express its deep sadness at the passing of this fine man.
