HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 96-4722, by Representatives Rust, Cole and Conway

 

      WHEREAS, Tuesday, February 13, 1996, is Student Lobby Day in the state of Washington and high school students from across the state have traveled to Olympia to participate in the second annual event; and

      WHEREAS, Student Lobby Day serves to teach high school students the importance of citizenship through acting on personal concern, participating in government, voicing concern to elected officials, and gathering with other concerned individuals; and

      WHEREAS, Student Lobby Day is sponsored by a high school organization call Student Action for the Environment founded nine years ago by a high school student who, because of his concern for the environment, worked to establish a recycling program in his high school; and

      WHEREAS, Student Action for the Environment has evolved into a state-wide network of high school groups advocating the protection of the environment in Washington state and across the nation, and emphasizing the responsibility people must take for their world and in their place in it; and

      WHEREAS, Student Action for the Environment has been informally involved in lobbying the legislature for eight years and in 1991, became the only student organization in the United States to write and successfully lobby for state legislation called the Washington State Procurement Law; and

      WHEREAS, The Washington State Procurement Law encourages the state to help preserve the environment by purchasing recycled paper; and

      WHEREAS, Student Action for the Environment has been the recipient of numerous environmental awards and honors at the state, county, and local levels;

      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Student Lobby Day for the contribution it makes to the education of the young people of Washington state; and

      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the organizers of Student Lobby Day, Terry Clayton, a teacher at Shorecrest High School, and Gery Nunnelee, a teacher at Shorewood High School.
