HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 96-4743, by Representatives Sehlin, Beeksma and Hymes

 

       WHEREAS, It is the policy of the Washington State Legislature to recognize excellence in service to this great state of Washington; and

       WHEREAS, Volunteer efforts in service to this great state of Washington are one of the foundations upon which better communities and an improvement in quality of life for all citizens are built and enhanced; and

       WHEREAS, The citizens of Washington genuinely appreciate and value the benefits of the natural resources of Puget Sound, including the Northern Puget Sound Region, and the Island County beaches; and

       WHEREAS, The Washington State University Beach Watchers Program and the Island County Beach Watchers have exceptionally contributed to the improvement and betterment of the Puget Sound and the Northern Puget Sound Region as well as the Island County beaches through various educational programs, group activities, and individual contributions and efforts; and

       WHEREAS, The Washington State University Beach Watchers volunteers have contributed more than eight thousand hours during the past year 1995, and a volunteer of particular note is Susan King of Greenbank, who volunteered over six hundred eighty hours during the past year 1995, and as a result was awarded the prestigious "Top Gunnel Beach Watcher of the Year" award for her singular efforts; and

       WHEREAS, The Washington State University Beach Watchers Program and the Island County Beach Watchers are a public-private partnership, being supported in part from public funds, from tourist revenues collected from hotel and motel assessments, as well as grants from corporate sponsors, including the Texaco Foundations, Nalley Fine Foods Corporation, and many other private donors; and

       WHEREAS, The tireless efforts of the Washington State University Beach Watchers Program and the Island County Beach Watchers have enormously contributed to the protection and preservation of the fragile environment of Puget Sound, the Northern Puget Sound Region, and the Island County beaches as well as helping to sustain and promote a responsible stewardship ethic among the citizens of these areas through the example set by their efforts, through their leadership achievements, and because of the meaningful educational programs sponsored;

       NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the highest level of excellence shown by the Washington State University Beach Watchers Program and the Island County Beach Watchers and for the shining example of inspiration they have set for others; and

       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be immediately transmitted by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to those individuals indicated herewith.
