Allowing two committee officers for large precincts in large counties.

AN ACT Relating to the number of precinct committee officers; and amending RCW 29.42.040.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

    Sec. 1.  RCW 29.42.040 and 1990 c 59 s 104 are each amended to read as follows:

Any member of a major political party who is a registered voter in the precinct may upon payment of a fee of one dollar file his or her declaration of candidacy as prescribed under RCW 29.15.010 with the county auditor for the office of precinct committee officer of his or her party in that precinct.  One committee officer from each precinct for each major political party shall be elected from the candidates having filed, if any.  However, in counties of five hundred thousand or more population in precincts having more than five hundred registered voters at the time of filing the county legislative authority may establish not later than the first day of filing for candidates for that position, a second precinct committee position for each such precinct.  Once established, the second precinct committee officer position remains in effect unless on the first day of filing for precinct committee officers at a subsequent filing period, the number of registered voters has fallen below five hundred.

When elected ((the)), a precinct committee officer shall serve so long as the committee officer remains an eligible voter in that precinct and until a successor has been elected at the next ensuing state general election in the even-numbered year.
