Relating to the management of state forest land that lies above a sole source aquifer.

    AN ACT Relating to state forest land that lies above a sole source aquifer; adding a new section to chapter 79.08 RCW; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION. Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 79.08 RCW to read as follows:

    State agencies managing land must maintain continuing forestry on forest lands on islands when those lands are above a sole source aquifer.  This management will maintain water purity and the availability of water for public and private domestic and commercial use.  State-owned lands must not be converted to a higher use when the conversion would have a potential negative impact on a single source aquifer.

NEW SECTION. Sec. 2.  The house of representatives and senate natural resources committees shall review existing state policies and local planning relating to impediments to maintaining forestry, grazing, and agriculture in urban and rural areas and prepare legislation if needed for the 1997 legislature.
