Requiring meetings for parents to inspect and review curriculum materials.



    AN ACT Relating to curriculum; adding a new section to chapter 28A.150 RCW; and prescribing penalties.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.150 RCW to read as follows:

    The legislature finds that parents have the primary responsibility for the welfare of their children.  The successful education of these children is the product of a responsive and rigorous educational system that depends on the participation of informed and concerned parents.

    Each school district shall send a letter to every parent of a student in the district inviting the parents to inspect and review all curriculum materials.  The letter shall inform parents that it is their right to do so.

    Two times a year, each school shall convene an evening meeting to allow parents to inspect and review the curriculum materials being used.

    Parents may immediately seek an injunction in court if the curriculum violates state or federal laws, rules, or regulations.  Districts shall pay attorneys' fees if a parent prevails.  If the district violates the injunction it shall be fined one thousand dollars per day for each violation.
