Authorizing replacement funding if federal funds to the head start program are reduced.



    AN ACT Relating to state funding to replace federal reductions in the head start program funding; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  The legislature finds that the federal head start program has enhanced the lives of children and their families through the nutrition and health programs, education, and social services available through the program.  Proposed reductions in head start program funding from the federal government threatens to reduce the size and effectiveness of the program.  The legislature intends to use state funds to mitigate federal reductions to the head start program.

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  The sum of two million sixty-six thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1997, from the general fund to the department of community, trade, and economic development to replace any federal funding reductions to the head start program during the 1995-97 biennium.
