SENATE RESOLUTION

By Senators Wojahn, Snyder, Sellar, Newhouse, Gaspard and Fairley

 

     WHEREAS, The state of Washington and Taiwan, Republic of China, have an extensive cultural, economic, and political relationship; and

 

     WHEREAS, Taiwan, Republic of China, is a strong trading partner of the state of Washington, with over seven and one-half billion dollars in trade between Taiwan and the state annually; and

 

     WHEREAS, The state of Washington has chosen to recognize the importance of its relationship with Taiwan by establishing a Trade Office in Taipei; and

 

     WHEREAS, A democratic, multiparty political system has been smoothly established in Taiwan in recent years; and

 

     WHEREAS, The direct role of Taiwan in international development programs and humanitarian relief operations has expanded significantly during the past decade, often in close coordination with our nation's efforts;

 

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state of Washington praise and thank Taiwan, Republic of China, for its beneficial commercial relationship, its record of democratization at home and humanitarian services abroad; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state of Washington supports and urges that the same respectful treatment shown toward other democratic nations be shown toward the President of Taiwan, Republic of China, and other Taiwanese officials by the government of the United States; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state of Washington recognizes the readiness of Taiwan to further contribute through broader participation in the international community, including the United Nations and such forums as multilateral trade associations and humanitarian relief organizations; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to The Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of Washington.
