SENATE RESOLUTION

By Senators Kohl, Prentice, Rinehart, Fairley, Heavey, Pelz and Anderson, C.

 

     WHEREAS, The Northwest Folklife Festival kicks off its twenty-fourth annual celebration of world cultures and traditional ethnic arts at the Seattle Center on Friday, May 26th; and

 

     WHEREAS, The four-day festival is a major cultural event in and of itself, attracting more than 180,000 visitors and bringing more than 6,000 participants from more than one hundred countries to demonstrate their arts; and

 

     WHEREAS, The festival contains seventeen stages, which will feature a 1,000- member dance and music performance, including presentations by Scandinavian Hambo players, Eastern European line dancers, African Marimba players, and old-time fiddlers; and

 

     WHEREAS, The Folklife Museum, as part of the festival, will present a retrospective exhibit of works by renowned Filipino painter Valeriano Laigo; and

 

     WHEREAS, The international Children's Village will give kids a hands-on opportunity to experience the cultures of Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas; and

 

     WHEREAS, The Uncommon Market will give festival goers a chance to sample ethnic cuisine at eighty booths; and

 

     WHEREAS, The festival encourages visitors to actively experience the ethnic arts by participating in international folk dancing, music workshops, sing-alongs, and jam sessions;

 

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate hereby recognize and celebrate the social, cultural and economic enrichment that the Northwest Folklife Festival brings to Washington State residents every year.
