SB 5596 - DIGEST

 

     Declares that a competent terminally ill adult has the right to make a voluntary, revocable, recorded request for his or her physician to prescribe medication that, if self-administered by the patient, will, in a painless, humane, and dignified manner, shorten the process of dying.

     Provides for examination of the patient by two physicians.

     Establishes revocation procedures for the patient's request.

     Does not require health care professionals to assist.

     Prohibits increased insurance rates.

     Prohibits undue influence.

     Prohibits medical clinics which exist for the sole purpose of aid in dying.

     Provides criminal penalties for assisting a suicide or suicide attempt.
