Background:  In honor of those survivors who, through their exceptional efforts, made it possible for those warships damaged in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, to continue to defend the United States in World War II, the Sequim Bypass will be renamed "The Pearl Harbor Memorial Bypass."

 

The Sequim Bypass project is scheduled to start construction in the summer of 1997 and be completed in the summer of 1999.  The project consists of a two-lane, 5.2 mile segment beginning at the Dungeness River Bridge and ending in the vicinity of Palo Alto Road on the easterly edge of the city of Sequim, thus bypassing the downtown area.  The new bypass will become a part of State Route (SR) 101; and the existing segment of SR 101 which runs through the city of Sequim will be turned over to the city.

 

Summary of Bill:  The new segment of road resulting from the Sequim Bypass project will be named AThe Pearl Harbor Memorial Bypass.@

 

Appropriation:  None.

 

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

 

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

 

Testimony For:  Renaming the bypass in memory of Pearl Harbor veterans who bravely risked their lives defending our nation is a just and deserving honor.
