SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH & LONG-TERM CARE

Majority Report:  Do pass.

Signed by Senators Deccio, Chair; Wood, Vice Chair; Benton, Fairley, Franklin and Strannigan.

Staff:  Joanne Conrad (786-7472)

Background:  In 1996, Congress passed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (P.L. 104-193).  This act, commonly referred to as "federal welfare reform," repealed the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program (AFDC), replacing it with "Temporary Assistance for Needy Families."

Summary of Bill:  The Revised Code of Washington contains many references to "Aid to Families with Dependent Children." These references appear in several titles, as well as throughout the title dealing with public assistance.  References to "Aid to Families with Dependent Children" are replaced with references to "Temporary Assistance to Needy Families," without modifying the underlying code sections in which the references appear.
