Background:  Veterans= organizations and local residents of the city of Sequim wish to rename the Sequim Bypass AThe Pearl Harbor Memorial Bypass@ to honor civilian and military personnel who, through their exceptional efforts and bravery, risked their lives to defend our nation during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

 

The Sequim Bypass project is scheduled to start construction in the summer of 1997 and be completed in the summer of 1999.  The project consists of a two-lane, 5.2 mile segment beginning at the Dungeness River Bridge and ending in the vicinity of Palo Alto Road on the easterly edge of the city of Sequim, thus bypassing the downtown area.  The new bypass will become a part of State Route (SR) 101, and the existing segment of SR 101 which runs through the city of Sequim will be turned over to the city.

 

Summary of Bill:  The Washington State Legislature requests that the Transportation Commission name the new segment of road resulting from the Sequim Bypass project on SR 101 AThe Pearl Harbor Memorial Bypass.@   The ceremony to name the bypass takes place on the date it is dedicated and opened to the public.

 

Appropriation:  None.

 

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

 

Testimony For:  Renaming the bypass in memory of Pearl Harbor veterans who bravely risked their lives defending our nation is a just and deserving honor.
